The University of Massachusetts Center for Health Care Finance and TRAP Systems
Dec 22, 2006

The University of Massachusetts Center for Health Care Finance (The Center) and TRAP Systems continue to combat health care fraud and abuse for their client, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Medicaid Program. Combined, this team provides health care revenue maximization, analysis and access to the VeriClaim fraud detection tool and overpayment recovery services to the Massachusetts Division of Medical Assistance (DMA), the Commonwealth’s Medicaid agency.

This team also includes Dr. Malcolm K. Sparrow, of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Dr. Sparrow leads the team in the development and implementation of new algorithms specifically designed to detect overpayments in Massachusetts.

Analysts from TRAP, The Center and DMA work side-by-side in analyzing Medicaid data to detect fraud and abuse. As of the spring of 2002, TRAP, the Center and DMA have identified potential recoveries of million of dollars after processing millions of claims.

This multi-year contract is expected to generate tens of millions of dollars more in recoveries and cost savings.
